Intellectual self care is about being curious and having a strong desire to learn. Many of us are aware that our bodies need exercising, but our bodies are not the only part of us that needs exercise. We also need to exercise our brains in order to have better problem solving skill in our lives. Exercising our brains allows us to open up our minds and see that there is more than one way to do things in life. It helps us develop new ideas and ways of thinking. Through exposure to more experiences we become more creative.
Intellectual self care may initially bring back memories of grueling study sessions. However, that doesn’t have to be the way you exercise your mind. If you enjoy study sessions than by all means take a class and study. Other ways you may wish to take care of yourself intellectually include:
- Read a book, magazine, or newspaper
- Put together a puzzle
- Play a mental game such as Chess, Scrabble, or Risk
- Do a Crossword, Fill In, Logic, or Wordfind Puzzle
- Visit a museum
- Listen to an audiobook
- Attend a play or musical performance
- Learn a new language
- Listen to NPR
- Engage in a debate or intellectual discussion
- Organize your environment to make it more comfortable and functional
- Experiment with new ways of doing things
- Get creative by doing art projects including knitting, sculpture, scrapbooking, soap making, etc.
- Write a story
Here is a list of quotes to inspire you. Inspiration is a good way to keep us motivated. If you see a quote that inspires you, you can post it where you will see it regularly and continue to be inspired by it daily.
